WEEKLY ENCOURAGERS

December 17, 2006

A group of children were giving a Christmas Pageant focused on the angelic message to Mary, prefaced by the phrase, Fear Not, which was incidentally, the same phrase voiced by the angels who announced the birth of Jesus to the shepherds.  In this performance, one young boy caught the attention of the audience.  His face was beaming and he was really into it - animated, even excited from beginning to end.  It was as if he knew all the lines and he often gave cues to those who were unsure of when they should come in or what they should say.  This boy was not only concerned about what he was doing, but everyone's part in the production so that the message might get across to the listeners.  I started thinking and wondering how many of us are excited about the coming of Christ and does our enthusiasm inspire others?  As Christians, we are recipients of the Good News so let us make sure that our message is not garbled, but comes across clearly to those who are wandering without the Savior!

December 10, 2006

Somebody just asked me a familiar question, "Are you ready for Christmas?"  Now, what does that mean?  To most people, it relates to the purchasing of gifts and all the preparations for the Big Day.  However, there are those who will not be ready for Christmas for various reasons.  It might be the loss of a loved one, a difficult transition in life or contemplating a challenge in the future which seems scary.  Wherever you may be in this season, remember that we are observing the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Yes, He did come to bring us salvation and eternal life, but never forget that He also wants to take us through this interim period by providing us with His grace, comfort, strength and direction.  So let us rejoice in the coming of Jesus and trust in His sufficiency to meet every need that we face - today, tomorrow and all of our days!

Christmas and the gift-giving process certainly gets a lot of attention.  People become concerned about who to give gifts to, what to give and if the gifts be appreciated.  Maybe we could take gift-giving to a new level.

First, we need to remember that God gave to the world, His Son, The Indescribable Gift (II Corinthians 9:15) which included Salvation (Ephesians 2:8) and Eternal Life (Romans 6:23) to all who would believe.

Of course, we realize that we can never match His Gift, but here is a formula that could make the giving of our gifts more meaningful and rewarding:

1. Pour some LOVE into your giving - even if you don't have a close relationship, think of each person and how you want to show that you care beyond the giving of your gift.

2. PRAY over your giving, not so much about the gifts, but for the recipients that God may bless them and meet their needs.

3. Give a little of YOURSELF - give a smile, a hug or a follow up phone call and for those who may be hurting or facing difficult times, you might offer a helping hand in the days ahead.

MAY  HIS  SPIRIT  INFLUENCE  OUR  GIVING!!!

Some time ago, two lost hikers survived three nights in the frigid San Jacinto Mountains of California because they stumbled upon the campsite of a man who had vanished a year before.  They were able to scavenge food, clothes and matches from his backpack which aided searchers in finding them by the smoke from their fire.  The backpack's owner, a retired social  worker, disappeared during a hike in May 2005, but as the sheriff said, "Even in his death, he helped people."  So here's something to ponder - There are people who are no longer a part of this earthly scene, but they left behind those assets which have helped us on occasion or frequently, to maneuver the terrain of life.  We should be grateful to God for putting them in touch with us.  Also, we need to ask ourselves - "What will we be leaving to those who follow us; to inspire, to increase their faith, to encourage them on the dark days and to give them perpetual hope to move forward."  Such a legacy doesn't just happen, but like the social worker, when it is part of who we are, it will be there for others to bless their lives!

Think about this - Can you be truly thankful, without being content?  Contentment is a wonderful asset, but somewhat rare.  You don't inherit it and you can't purchase it.  Some see it as an attitude or a way of thinking and acting.  For sure, you can tell when someone is content.  I recently met a man and woman who are Haitians. What they said about the Lord and His goodness plus how they looked, showed clearly that they were content.  When asked who was the wealthiest man, Socrates replied, "He who is content with the least."  Jesus tells us not to worry, even over the minimal requirements of life because He knows what we need.  Paul says essentially the same thing, adding that he has learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  This does not mean that we should cease striving to be our best or to go further in life, but how far we go and how much we acquire cannot be the source of our contentment.  We must rely on God and His sufficiency.  We can draw these conclusions:

1. We are either content or we are not content.

2. Contentment is being satisfied with what we have.

3. Learning to be content should be an ongoing experience.

4. Living with contentment is one of the greatest achievements.

"GODLINESS  WITH  CONTENTMENT  IS  GREAT  GAIN!!!"   I Tim. 6:6

Here is something that might surprise you.  A poll was taken of Independent Women, that is women who are entrepreneurs, in management or well-paying jobs, many of them making $100,000. or more per year.  Now, get this, almost 50% of those responding said their greatest fear was that of becoming "bag ladies."  That seems pretty hard to believe, but when you look out at our world, you see what has happened to others and you realize that changing conditions can take position and possessions from you, almost without warning.

There is another reason why people might have a pessimistic outlook and this is more serious.  If all that you have is centered around you, you are in bad shape.  At the conclusion of a story Jesus tells about a rich man who had his position and possessions taken from him, He says, "This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself and is not rich toward God."  The lesson here is not that Jesus wants all of His followers to be poor, but it is about setting priorities -

HOLDING FIRMLY TO YOUR FAITH AND HOLDING EVERYTHING ELSE LIGHTLY."  Do this and you need have no fear of the future because He will never leave you or fail you!

This week, the Encourager takes the form of a poem.  Actually, I wrote this today for a friend who has been and is going through a very difficult situation.  I am sending it to you hoping that it will encourage you or someone you know.  Feel free to pass it on.....

THIS  WAY

Some think THIS WAY is smooth,

Without a hill or turn,

But I discover day by day,

I've so much more to learn.

Right now, THIS WAY seems hard,

Exhausted, I just grope

For some new light across my path

But all I have is hope.

THIS WAY, my question comes,

When will this trial end?

I cry to God and He calls back,

There's help around the bend.

THIS WAY is trod by faith

In God, Who cannot fail,

I am weak, but He is strong

And He will yet prevail.

In God's own time, THIS WAY

Will all make sense to me,

And I'll rejoice in praising Him

Throughout eternity!

I came across a statement I had written some time ago and I would like you to think about.....It doesn't matter how much we are doing, if it doesn't take us anywhere on the journey.....Life is a journey and should not be lived in a hit or miss fashion.  You've heard people talk about going around in circles or spinning their wheels and you get the point.  This can apply to some small, but important task which is not accomplished because we are busy with other things.  The Bible portrays the Christian life in terms of a journey or pilgrimage where we progress day by day as we fulfill God's purpose on our way to the Celestial City.  A Quaker once observed that many Christians are "creatures of activity" which means that we can be busy doing many things, but not moving forward in our growth in Christ and our service to Him.  Here is an idea.  As you start each day, say a prayer something like this:  Dear Lord, help me to make every effort to follow your plan for me, this day.  May this influence how I think and what I do, so that my life may count for You and show progress on I journey Home!

Damaged  Goods....you have heard the expression.  We are not talking about merchandise, but people.  It describes those who feel they have lost something of their value because of that which has happened to them or that which is going on in their lives.  Being born with a problem which cannot be corrected, being a participant in a tragedy, being involved in an accident which results in long term injuries, being diagnosed with an illness which will require a lot of care, or being surrounded with circumstances that impose unwanted burdens upon you.  These are just some examples of why people feel like Damaged Goods, but it is not necessary to let Satan drag you down into the "Slough of Despond" because there is a way out - GOD'S WAY.... He wants you to know that you are of "Full Value" to Him - His love and His power are reaching out to you wherever you find yourself at this moment.  Jesus died to save us from sin and from ourselves, so TRUST IN HIM.  He will lift you up; He will give you confidence and you will have a new reason for living!

Six weeks before Kyle Paxman's scheduled wedding, a stranger walked into her office with evidence that her husband-to-be was involved with another woman, the stranger's girlfriend.  The dress had arrived, the flowers ordered, the menus were chosen and 180 guests were coming from many places to make a weekend of the event.  But rather than cancel the reception, Ms. Paxman turned it into a charity benefit.  Her comment was, "You take something awful, turn it into something positive and start the healing process."  Actually, she followed the advice of an old adage which says, When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade out of it."  What do we do when life turns against us, when we are hurt, deceived, lied about, cheated or otherwise treated badly?  It is so easy to react with anger, hatred, revenge or bitterness, but that is not God's way and only makes matters worse.  As followers of the Lord, we are to think positively and act appropriately with a spirit of love, depending on God to redeem a bad situation.  Like Joseph, whose brothers sold him into slavery, we will then be able to say, "You meant it for evil, but God meant it for good!"

A one-room schoolhouse came back into the news when an Amish class was interrupted by a man, an outsider, who entered the door on an evil mission.  Subsequently, he opened fire on a line of innocent girls and then, shot himself.  You have probably heard the news accounts many times, but there were other reports which I want to mention.  One said that his wife, on that same morning, was leading a prayer group where they were praying for children.  How ironic, that this man, who apparently had no use for God, was controlled by the Devil and ended up destroying himself.  Furthermore, at the time of the funeral procession for four of the girls, we were told that one family had invited the killer's family to join in the occasion.  In addition, dozens of Amish neighbors came to the funeral of the man who had taken the lives of their loved ones.  What a show of compassion and forgiveness - a giant step toward healing!  Remember this, we never fully follow Jesus until we learn to forgive and until then, we will never experience the completeness of His peace and His joy.  If there is someone you need to forgive, DO IT TODAY!

After Tropical Storm Ernesto passed through Florida with very little of its predicted impact, an interviewer asked Max Mayfield, Director of the National Hurricane Center, how he felt and this was his answer.  "As a home owner, I am very happy, but as a forecaster, I am not very happy."  He wanted to hit a home run, but working with storms is an imperfect science and always will be.  We have to believe that he and his colleagues did their best, but in this case, they missed the mark.

We who follow Jesus are supposed to aim for the high standards of the Bible and since none of us is absolutely perfect, we will face moments of failure.  What we do next is very important.  Will we lower our expectations or forge ahead as Paul describes in Philippians 3-12-14?... "I am not already perfect, but I keep going on grasping more firmly that purpose for which Christ took hold of me.  I leave the past behind and make every effort to move forward as I press toward the goal of pleasing the God I serve."  Here's  the final word, don't accept mediocrity in your walk with the Lord - go for the prize!

Some years ago, a man said that he had decided to live dangerously since there is really no other way that you can live.  In part, he was right because this is a dangerous world, but most of us do not put our lives at unnecessary risk.  However, there are those who do and such a person was Steve Irwin the "Crocodile Hunter."  He became famous for mingling with wildlife and entertaining millions by engaging in risky behavior.  He probably had many narrow escapes, but that did not stop him and he continued doing what he loved until he was stabbed unexpectedly by a Stingray, causing his death.  History has countless examples of those who decided to live dangerously for a worthy cause and many were followers of Jesus who risked all, suffered greatly and sometimes were martyred for His sake.  Maybe today, we have put too much emphasis on saving our lives when Jesus asks us to be willing to lose our lives for Him and the Gospel.  If you read the Book of Acts, you will find that to be the hallmark of the early Christians.  Jesus doesn't ask us to throw ourselves to the lions, but He does challenge us to do whatever it takes to live for Him and represent Him in a sinful world....LET'S DO IT!

Crises – Christian Perspective

There are those who say that we are living in a Crisis Culture and I am inclined to agree with them.  While there are times when grave warnings need to be sounded, it appears that we are hearing alarms which sometimes magnify the existing situation.  Couple this with the amount of negative information which is propagated and you can understand how this affects the way people think and act.  The recent hurricane alert in Florida is an example.  The worst scenario proposed would only have interrupted people's lives for 2 days, but to see the gas lines and the emptying of store shelves suggested conditions much more serious.  The real event was less than a Nor'easter in New England.  Another example is a fictional show on TV which has a Geyser exploding and bringing massive destruction to the USA.  So how are we, as Christians, to position ourselves when we are exposed to so much that is crisis and negative in content?  The answer has 2 phases: (1) We are to be Realists - seeing things as they are or as they might be and taking prudent action.  (2) We are to be Optimists - refusing any influence which brings negative feelings or causes us to panic and relying on God's plan which includes His promise to be with us no matter what.

Prepare for Perilous Times

Recently a journalist and cameraman were captured and pressured by terrorists to convert to Islam.  Following that, a Terrorist Video emerged with the voice of a convert from the USA and the message strongly urged Americans to embrace the religion of Islam, or else....

Of course, this is not going to happen, but on the other hand, it isn't a joke because the intention of this enemy is to kill us, as infidels.  As we remember 9/11, experts tell us that there is more to come from this Satanic movement.  Since Christians are a primary target, what should we be doing?  (1) Encourage ourselves in the Lord - He is on our side and He will be the final Victor.   We need to live each day by faith in Him and His promises.  (2) We need to be prepared to stand against evil with courage and perseverance {Read Ephesians 6:10-18}.  (3) We need to encourage those who are weak in the faith and help others to find salvation and refuge in Him.  We do not know WHAT we might have to go through, BUT WE DO KNOW WHO WILL GET US THROUGH BECAUSE OUR GOD IS ALMIGHTY!

Trust God

Brooke Astor is part of the famous Astor Family and at 104 years old, she is “worth” 45 million.  So you might think that she would be living a comfortable life.  According to a recent report, things are not quite that way.  After giving millions to charity, she seems to be living as a charity case, in conditions that are less than desirable.  Apparently, her son is at the controls and she has nothing to say about the diet or care which she receives.  The niceties she used to enjoy are no longer available to her and the son is accused of not always rendering help when she needs it.  A law suit is in process and hopefully this matter will be resolved.  But here is a truth for today.  There are riches and resources which we may acquire or have access to in this life and they may assist us in different ways, but there is no guarantee of permanence.  However, as followers of the Lord, He promises that His riches and His resources will never run out.  Let us be sure to turn to Him and trust in Him to meet our every need!

God Keeps His Promises

Once a week, for 27 years, Dr. David Nichols has gone to Tangier Island, VA to provide medical care for the 600 residents.  Most of the time he flies since he is also a pilot and he has only missed his appointment a few times because of severe weather.  It was after medical school that Dr. Nichols began a practice on the mainland and started making trips to this isolated island in the Chesapeake.  When he moved his practice farther away, he promised the people that he would continue to come on schedule.  Recently he said, "The more I go, the more I want to go, I feel a part of their lives.  The other thing is, who else is going to do it?"  This is an impressive story because long term promises are hard to keep.  As humans, we can often find a reasonable excuse.  Of course, with God it is different.  He never made a promise that He does not keep.  The promise of the Messiah (Jesus) as our Savior, spanned thousands of years, but it was fulfilled.  The Bible gives us promises which we can claim for every situation of life.  They are not "good luck" charms, but they are God's word and we can trust Him to do as He says.  HE CANNOT FAIL, FOR HE IS GOD!

“Little Things”

It was only a 1/2 inch plug in the Food Waste Disposal which goes under the sink, but during the installation process I neglected to punch it out so that the Dishwasher could drain through the unit.  Consequently, after using the Washer, I discovered a pool of water in the bottom.  Correcting the problem was not difficult, but it sure made a difference.  The incident reminded me of sayings like, "little things count" and "little things add up."  A little slip of the tongue (passing on gossip) can do a lot of harm or a little lie (if there is such a thing) can often result in complicating a situation rather than resolving it.  On the other hand, little things like a smile, a few words of comfort or cheer, a caring attitude or action can give hope and help to people just when they need it.  You can be sure of this, little things are important, so let us pray for God's help that we may avoid the little things that are questionable and make every effort to consider and do those little things which will bring blessings to others as well as to ourselves!

God is Faithful!

The Psalmist emphasizes that we should not forget God's benefits or blessings and this exhortation is supported throughout the scriptures.  How easy it is to forget how God has answered prayer and all that He has done in the face of what He does not seem to be doing, here and now.  Down through the ages, leaders like Moses, prophets like Elijah, the disciples of Jesus and people like us have found ourselves questioning the Lord as the result of a new challenge to our faith - which always seems to be an ominous mountain.  Some years ago, I decided to look back and pinpoint the many times that my life could have been snuffed out, but God, in His mercy, preserved me.  I expect that you could do the same.  The fact is, we can all join the writer of Amazing Grace when he said, "Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come."  I do not know what you are staring at in the present or in the days to come, but I strongly suggest that you go to your mental memory bank and review the goodness of God in the past.  I have found that this practice increases my faith in the present and I am sure it will do the same for you.  THE GOD OF YOUR YESTERDAYS IS THE GOD OF YOUR TODAY!

DARINGLY DIFFERENT!

The other day, I read an unidentified quote which said, "If you expect to be successful, you have to dare to be different."  For those of us who claim to follow Jesus, we might put it this way, "If we expect to live by God's plan, we must dare to be different."  Jesus asks us to be different in three ways; thinking, attitude and behavior.  In a world that has so much hatred, immorality, dishonesty, hypocrisy, resentment, sadness and despair, He challenges us to be people of love, uprightness, integrity; people who are dependable, forgiving; ambassadors of joy and hope.  Jesus warned us that it would not be popular to live by His standards which are often contrary to those of our current society.  The question is, "Will we dare to be different, to stand up consistently, instead of taking the easy way out?"  It will take courage, but it will be worth it - both now and in eternity!

TRUST HIM!

The other day, I went out to my car, turned on the ignition and nothing happened.  With all the modern technology, I had received no warning.

Immediately I realized that I wasn't going anywhere and my errand would have to be postponed.  I know that this inconvenience was of little consequence, but it got me to thinking how quickly life and circumstances can change, taking a negative direction.  Very often, there is no quick fix like replacing a battery in your car, if the problems you face have a long history or a dim future.  When you happen to find yourself in such a"hard place," the easiest thing is to resort to a doom and gloom attitude which will not help you or anyone else.  Here is something to put in your mental disaster kit - as a follower of Jesus, you are in a unique position.  You belong to God who controls the universe and knows every detail of your life, therefore, you need to pray and trust Him to work out His solution.   As you do this, He will show you the way, give you peace and bring you through your situation in a way that is beyond what you or anyone else can do.

Trust Him, He works!

WITNESS FAITHFULLY

Stephen Baldwin is a well known actor but now he is doing something with his life that he says is much more rewarding than anything he did in Hollywood.  The story begins with a Brazilian housekeeper.  She came to work for Stephen and his wife who is also a Brazilian, This woman believed that God would use her to help this couple to come to Christ and subsequently be involved in a ministry for Him.  She shows up for the job and in so many words, says, "I'm here because you're going to become born-again Christians."  Stephen says his response was, "I'm thinking - this woman needs a prescription."  His wife comes to Christ first and he is so impressed that he makes the same decision.

As he puts it, his life was changed from a hard-core party man to a hard-core Man of Faith.  He has written a book about his conversion and he is engaged in a ministry of spreading the Gospel.  You can learn more at his website - stephenbaldwin.com.  Whatever this couple accomplishes for God, it will all be connected to a humble woman who believed she was on a mission for the Lord.  Each of us are on a mission and we need to be serious about carrying it out each day.  Who knows what chain reaction will result from our faithfulness!

HAPPY “RETURNS”

My son and his wife have a vacation home on a lake in Michigan, where the family has enjoyed many summer breaks.  The nearest town has a small library where people often donate books which are then sold as a fund raiser.  Last year, Bruce and Margaret purchased a number of books, including  Mr. Jones, Meet the Master - sermons by Dr. Peter Marshall.  After going home to New York State, Bruce was sorting the books and when he opened this volume he was shocked to find the name of his great aunt with her address when she resided in California, inscribed in the handwriting of his grandmother.  How this book found its way, over a period of 40+ years, from California to a small town in Michigan and into the hands of a family member will remain a mystery.   But I am reminded of a saying, "What goes around, comes around."  While we often associate this with the wrongs people do, make no mistake about it, when you do what's right and perform acts of love, your deeds will come back to bless your life and that's no mystery!

PROVIDENCE

Clara Jean Brown of Daphne, AL was standing in her kitchen praying for the safe return of her family who were traveling home from a holiday trip to the beach.  She had just said "Amen" when lightning exploded and the whole room was engulfed with a ball of fire.  Clara was thrown to the ground, dazed and disoriented, but otherwise uninjured.  Readers of this news item were asked the question, "What do you make of this story, was it divine intervention, just a coincidence, or who knows?"  Those of us who follow the Lord believe that His good hand was upon this dear lady.  While she prayed for others, God took care of her.  It is good for us to pray at the beginning of each day and throughout the day whenever a need arises.  Turning everything over to the Lord removes our fears and gives us peace!

STAY TUNED IN!

Eight year old Evan Thompson was on a weekend camping trip in Colorado with a group which included his aunt and guardian, Teddi Gray.  At some point, he disappeared and was lost for four days without food or water before he was finally located.  Some of the rescue efforts were ineffective because the noise of helicopters caused the boy to hide in a cave.  Searchers rode through the area on ATV's calling for Evan to respond, but apparently, it was the familiar voice of Arthur Gray, who was flown in to join the party, that encouraged him to come out of the woods.  There is an interesting parallel in the Bible where Jesus is called the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep.  His sheep are those who recognize His voice and follow Him.  It is in Jesus that we find security and direction for living day by day.  Are you tuned in to Him???

TIME PRECIOUS! USE WISELY!

Earl Washington Jr. was within 9 days of his execution when he was pardoned in the year 2000.  After spending 18 years in prison for a rape and murder committed in 1982, new DNA testing proved that another man was guilty of the crime.  Since that time, a court awarded Mr. Washington 2.25 million dollars in damages and he is now gainfully employed, but the question which comes to my mind is "How can you repay this man for the 18 years of his life which he lost?"  Here is something to ponder - the Bible reminds us that our time on earth is limited and we don't have to be in prison in order to lose the value of each day as it is given to us.  In a world where the hours seem to evaporate with increasing speed, we need to realize how important it is to use our days to fulfill God's purpose through our lives.  In the final analysis, that's why we're here!

EMPATHY!

Dorothy is a waitress in her thirties and I have had a number of brief conversations with her over the past few years.  At one point, she told me that she was attending a local university which required considerable effort on her part.  I had not seen her for a while and when I did, she had finished school with her Masters Degree.  When I asked her what she was going to do, she answered without hesitation,

"I want to teach in the ghetto, I can relate to those kids and their experiences, I know what it's like to be in a Lock-up, I've been there!"

I have no doubt that Dorothy will achieve her ambition.  II Corinthians 1:3,4 provides a reminder that God takes us places in life and helps us get through difficult situations in order that we may give comfort and help to others with similar concerns.  Saying, "I've been there" is good when we offer encouragement and aid!

TEMPORAL vs. GREATER ETERNAL REWARDS

Perhaps you heard about the 4 year old boy in India who ran 40 miles non-stop in slightly over 7 hours.  This was quite a feat for a child, who, until recently, had lived at a near poverty level. But a new day dawned when crowds gathered to  applaud and shout their praises.  He is now a celebrity.  This reminds me that, as children or adults, our motivation for what we do is sometimes based on possible rewards and recognition.  Today, I am thinking of people who have not received many honors in this life, but will certainly receive their rewards in the next.  Their deeds have often gone unnoticed like faithfulness to God and country, giving of themselves without expecting any return, sitting with someone who is sorrowing, encouraging a person who has lost the way, making time for those who are neglected or offering hope to that soul in despair.  While there is nothing wrong with being honored for achievements here and now, let us not forget the difference between that which is temporal and that which is eternal!

SATISFIED?

A cup of coffee is just a drink, but a Frappucino is an experience.  So believes Bryant Simon, a historian who is searching for the meaning of modern life amid the round tables and comfy sofas of Starbucks coffee shops.  He believes that such coffee houses fill some kind of deep desire for connecting with other people, but Starbucks also makes sure you can be alone when you're out, if that's what you want.  You have the feeling that you are out in public, but you don't need to talk to anyone.  Simon says that many people have told him that when they travel to a strange place, their first stop is Starbucks.  According to this writer, there is a deep sense of unpredictability in the modern world and Starbucks provides people with predictability.  He seems to conclude that a lot of people suffer from a lack of identity, feelings of insecurity and a sense of loneliness.  When we belong to the Lord, we know we are children of God, we know that we can depend on Him at all times and we know that we are never alone, for He has promised to be with us constantly.  Do we act like we are still searching or do we demonstrate that we have found the meaning of Life???

SHARE HOPE!

We live in a world and a society, where there is a major propagation of negativity.  A recent report showed that in a given period, ABC, CBS, and NBC gave 183 news items on Rising Gas Prices while the encouraging Rise in Employment Numbers was only mentioned 23 times.  From Washington to the informal chats over a cup of coffee, the negative flow of statements and conversations is depressing, to say the least.  Therefore, we who follow the Lord need to be very careful about becoming involved in such behavior which is unproductive and wrong.  Jesus tells us that He can give us His Peace and His Joy in the midst of a troubled world where we are to Shine as Lights in the darkness.  In Philippians 4:8, Paul reminds us to Dwell on the Right Things and the Good Things.  As we think, live and speak positively, people will believe in the hope that we share in Jesus Christ!

SHARE CHRIST!

Some days ago, Randall McCloy, the sole survivor of the Sago Mine disaster, released a report to the affected families and the public.  It tells his version of what happened in the hours that he spent with the other trapped miners.  Along with other details, he mentions a time when one of the men led the others in the Sinners' Prayer.  This is significant because any of those men who sincerely prayed that prayer and trusted in Jesus as their Savior, were ready (like the thief on the cross) to enter into the presence of the Lord.  When that man led his fellow-workers in that prayer, it may have been the greatest deed of his life.  So here's the point: Finding Christ makes a difference in your life and mine; sharing Christ with others can make a difference for them, for time and eternity!

PRAYER

The Wall Street Journal reported that a new study on cardiac health found that heart-surgery patients showed no benefit when strangers prayed for their recovery.  Patients who knew they were being prayed for had a slightly higher rate of complications, perhaps because they were alarmed that they were ill enough to be in anyone's prayers.

The writer goes on to say, "We don't presume to know what this study proves, other than perhaps that science is not an especially effective means by which to study God.  Other research, not to mention the everyday experience of just about every medical professional, has shown that prayer can be beneficial for the sick."  It seems that those who authored this study are skeptics, about God and His connection with us.  We, who have come to trust in Jesus know that He has told us to pray, not as some emergency genie button, but on a regular basis, with the assurance that He is at the right hand of the Father praying for us.  Incidentally, a number of people have told me, in recent days, how the prayers of God's people have brought remarkable answers in their particular situations.  Amen.  Prayer is our greatest resource!

PRAY FOR COURAGE

It happened recently in the town of Gragerland, Texas.  An elderly lady lived alone in a house and a man named Jim lived next door in an RV.

They became friends and he tried to help her whenever she needed it, in fact, he had a baby monitor hooked up so he would be alerted if something was wrong.  He had assisted her when she had fallen, but this night was different.  It was 10 PM and he heard some strange sounds - then there was the voice of Ms. Smith calling, "Help me, Jim, the house is on fire!"  Jim made his way cautiously over to her home and when he opened the door he was met with smoke.  He went to the kitchen, grabbed her by the hand and led her outside.  Shortly thereafter, the firemen arrived and the rest is history.  Someone might say, "That's a nice story, but wouldn't most neighbors do the same thing?"  Not quite, you see Jim is blind...   Here's a thought:  The next time you are faced with a challenge and you are fearful, hesitant or lacking confidence, remember Jim and ask the Lord to enable you to be courageous and strong.  You can do it!

PERSISTENCE

Several decades ago, major oil companies were drilling for oil in Montana, but met with little success. They made a decision in the mid 90's to shut down their operations. Richard Findley, a geologist and wildcat producer thought they were wrong. To make a long story short, he bought up leases on the cheap and helped spark a boom by opening a new field which is producing 48,000 barrels of high quality crude per day, with an unknown potential. This raises a question. Do we sometimes give up too soon, on ourselves, other people or difficult situations in our lives? As I see it, Jesus could have given up on His disciples, but He didn't. Our God is in the business of changing circumstances and people, including us, and as we turn to Him, He promises grace, wisdom and patience to see positive results.

LIFE'S PURPOSE

Pete Maravich became a basketball legend. He was a great player plus a performer who made spectacular moves during the games he played in high school, college and on professional teams. He died suddenly at 40 and a post-mortem exam revealed that his heart did not have a left coronary artery. Given the years he spent running up and down the court at full tilt, you have to wonder why he did not pass away at an earlier date. I believe there is a reason. Basketball was his life. He broke many records, became famous and made lots of money, but he was never really happy or at peace. He tried many ways to fill the void in his life, including alcohol and religion, but nothing worked. It wasn't until after he quit the game, that he found the answer when he was introduced to Jesus Christ and accepted Him as his Savior and Lord. Previously, his life was mostly self-centered, but now he had a desire to focus on others. He showed a greater devotion to his wife and children, he gave considerable time and resources to helping young people and he traveled widely, sharing with audiences how Christ could make a difference in their lives, too. This, I believe, was the reason why God extended Pete's life. Each day that you and I live is an extension from God so that we may experience His blessings and share them with others. That's the life that leads to satisfaction!

REAL FAITH

The Way of Faith does not always take the same course. The reason, sometimes, is related to us and how we conduct our lives. Many of us want to be classified as people of faith, but are we looking for the paths of least resistance with the easy answers? On the other hand, the Lord seems to take some of His people through tough times that more resemble an obstacle course. This requires a faith that endures; a faith that doesn't give up. In the midst of such a situation, when the ship was going down, the Apostle Paul publicly announced, "I BELIEVE GOD." I have known people who evidenced that kind of faith, even in the face of others who were questioning God and the circumstances surrounding them. We're talking here about REAL FAITH, not just an emotional whim or a special moment of influence, but a steady belief in God, a belief in the kind of person He is and a belief in what He has promised. With such a foundation, whatever life may bring, it will only increase our faith, not drag us down!

POSITIVE ALTERNATIVES

YOU ARE PROBABLY FAMILIAR WITH THE IDEA, BUT LET ME REMIND YOU AS I HAVE BEEN REMINDED THREE TIMES WITHIN THE PAST FEW DAYS. FIRST, THERE WAS AN ARTICLE ABOUT "ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK" WHICH SEEKS TO GET YOUNG PEOPLE INVOLVED IN USING THEIR "OFF" TIME TO PARTICIPATE IN WORTHWHILE PROJECTS. THE GOOD PART IS THAT AN INCREASING NUMBER HAVE OPTED FOR THE ALTERNATIVE THIS YEAR. THEN, A FRIEND, WHO HAD EXPERIENCED A BAD DAY, RECEIVED AN INSPIRING E-MAIL WHICH ENCOURAGED HER TO GO INTO AN ALTERNATIVE MODE OF THINKING. AS SHE SAID IT, "I FOUND ALL THE JOYFUL MOMENTS OF THE DAY-REFLECTED ON THEM-AND LET THE REST OF THE DAY GO. OH, WHAT A BLESSED DAY I HAD, AFTER ALL." FINALLY, A PHONE CALL GAVE ME AN UPDATE ON A COUPLE I HAD KNOWN YEARS AGO. THEY MOVED TO ANOTHER STATE AND AFTER ANALYZING THEIR LIVESTYLE, THEY DECIDED TO TAKE THE ALTERNATIVE OF BECOMING MORE SERIOUS ABOUT FOLLOWING AND SERVING CHRIST. LATER ON, THEIR CHURCH WAS ON THE VERGE OF CLOSING BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL PROBLEMS AND THIS COUPLE CAME UP WITH AN ALTERNATIVE IDEA TO HELP SAVE THE SITUATION. I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY...IF YOU ARE FACING ANY DILEMMA WHICH IS DEFEATING YOU - THEN YOU ARE A CANDIDATE FOR A POSITIVE ALTERNATIVE AND GOD WILL HELP YOU FIND IT, IF YOU ONLY ASK HIM!

TIME

YOU ARE ALL FAMILIAR WITH RANDY MCCLOY, THE SOLE SURVIVOR OF THE SAGO MINE DISASTER SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. A VERY RECENT REPORT CITES DOCTORS AND HIS WIFE DESCRIBING HIS RECOVERY AS MIRACULOUS. HIS ABILITY TO REMEMBER, CONVERSE WITH FAMILY, AND EVEN DISPLAY A SENSE OF HUMOR, HAVE EXCEEDED EXPECTATIONS. HE HAS A LONG WAY TO GO, BUT THERE IS ROOM FOR OPTIMISM. ON THE OTHER SIDE, MANY ARE ASKING WHY RANDY ALONE ESCAPED WITH HIS LIFE. SOME SAY IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS YOUNGER, BUT WE REALLY DON'T KNOW UNLESS WE BELIEVE WITH THE PSALMIST THAT OUR TIMES ARE IN GOD'S HANDS. THIS RAISES THE QUESTION AS TO WHY YOU AND I ARE STILL LIVING. OBVIOUSLY, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT WE DON'T WORK IN A COAL MINE, BUT IT HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH GOD WANTING TO WORK OUT HIS PURPOSE THROUGH YOUR LIFE AND MINE. I SUGGEST THAT IF WE KNEW THAT OUR LIVES WOULD BE TERMINATED IN THE NEAR FUTURE, WE WOULD BE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT WASTING "OUR TIME" BY EVALUATING WHAT WE DO AND WHY WE DO IT - EVERY DAY. WHAT DO YOU THINK???

DECISIONS

JUST WHEN MANY PEOPLE HAD ADJUSTED TO USING COATED POTS AND PANS, A NEW STUDY TELLS US THAT TEFLON WHICH IS USED IN THE COATING PROCESS, CONTAINS CARCINOGENS OR CANCER CAUSING AGENTS. ANOTHER {CONTROVERSIAL} STUDY SAYS THAT CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D MAY BE LESS EFFECTIVE IN PREVENTING BONE LOSS AND FRAGMENTATION THAN WAS PRESUMED. A FRIEND OF MINE RECENTLY DEVELOPED A BLEEDING ULCER WHICH AGGRAVATED SEVERAL OTHER HEALTH CONDITIONS. AFTER A STAY IN THE HOSPITAL AND NUMEROUS TESTS, IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THREE PRESCRIPTIONS WHICH HE WAS TAKING AND DIDN'T NEED, CAUSED THE PROBLEM. HERE IS WHAT I WANT YOU TO THINK ABOUT. THE EXPERTS IN THESE AND OTHER FIELDS ARE NOT INTENTIONALLY NEGLIGENT, BUT THEY ARE HUMAN BEINGS WHO CAN ONLY SEE SO FAR DOWN THE ROAD AND WHO ARE ALSO SUBJECT TO ERROR. AS FOLLOWERS OF THE LORD, THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS WE CAN DO. FIRST, MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT YOUR LIFE IN HIS HANDS, BECAUSE HE MAKES NO MISTAKES. SECONDLY, ASK THE LORD FOR WISDOM AS YOU DEAL WITH THE ISSUES OF DAILY LIVING; THEN, GET ALL THE INFORMATION YOU CAN, ASK THE NECESSARY QUESTIONS AND SEEK THE BEST ADVICE SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE THE BEST DECISIONS!

YOU WILL PROBABLY REMEMBER THE GENERAL WHO WAS CALLED ON TO TAKE CHARGE IN THE AFTERMATH OF HURRICANE KATRINA HITTING THE GULF COAST. IN A PRESS CONFERENCE, HE REFERRED TO CERTAIN PEOPLE AS BEING "STUCK ON STUPID" AND AS I THOUGHT ABOUT IT, I REALIZED THAT THE PHRASE MIGHT HAVE DESCRIBED ME ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION - HOW ABOUT YOU? RECENTLY, AT MY DAUGHTER'S HOME, WE SAW A BIRD FLYING FROM A NEARBY TREE AND CRASHING INTO THE GLASS ON A SLIDING DOOR. IT HAPPENED REPEATEDLY EVERY MORNING WHEN THE SUN WAS SHINING AND THE BIRD NEVER REACHED HIS OBJECTIVE, NOR DID HE LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE. HAVE YOU EVER KEPT TRYING TO SOLVE A PROBLEM IN THE SAME WAY EVEN THOUGH IT DIDN'T WORK? HAVE YOU CONTINUED TO ARGUE OVER A MATTER EVEN THOUGH IT WAS GOING NOWHERE? HAVE YOU PERSISTED IN REACTING TO SITUATIONS WITH IRRITATION AND ANGER EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE NOT SEEN ANY POSITIVE RESULTS? LIKE THE BIRD, IT IS EASY TO WASTE TIME AND ENERGY ON EMPTY PURSUITS. HOW MUCH BETTER TO ASK GOD FOR HIS HELP IN FINDING WAYS TO BRING ABOUT WORTHWHILE SOLUTIONS, RATHER THAN SETTLING FOR A STALEMATE!

ACTOR/AUTHOR CHUCK NORRIS AND HIS WIFE WERE AMONG A GROUP INVITED TO THE WHITE HOUSE FOR A VALENTINE'S DINNER. WHILE THEY ENJOYED THAT VERY MUCH, THE HIGHLIGHT OF THEIR STAY IN WASHINGTON WAS GOING TO WALTER REED HOSPITAL AND VISITING WITH A NUMBER OF AMPUTEES. EACH ONE HAD A STORY TO TELL AND WANTED TO TELL IT. THE STORY CHUCK RELATED WAS ABOUT A YOUNG SOLDIER WHO WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED. HE WAS BLEEDING PROFUSELY AND A MEDIC WAS STABBING AT HIS ARM TRYING TO LOCATE A VEIN. HE HEARD THEM SAY THAT HE WOULD DIE IF THEY DID NOT CONNECT WITH A VEIN SOON. AT THIS POINT, A SERGEANT SUGGESTED THAT THEY PRAY AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER DOING SO, A VEIN WAS FOUND. THE YOUNG MAN FINISHED HIS STORY BY SAYING, "IT WAS AT THAT MOMENT THAT I BECAME A BELIEVER." PRAYER CHANGES THINGS AND PRAYER IS A LIFE-CHANGING FORCE. LET US FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF THE SERGEANT - MAKE PRAYER A PRIORITY, IN TIMES OF CRISIS AND THROUGHOUT THE DAY. IT WILL AFFECT OTHERS FOR GOOD, AS IT HAPPENED IN THE CASE OF THIS SERVICEMAN, AND BEYOND THAT, PRAYER WILL CHANGE OUR LIVES AS WELL.

February 13, 2006

Learning to forgive is a valuable lesson, especially in our society today. Resentment, anger and hatred are daily fare in the newspapers, on TV and in many conversations. In some quarters, it is popular to have an unforgiving spirit. Jesus talked a lot about forgiveness. He established it as a principle for living, in The Lord's Prayer, and demonstrated the ultimate act of forgiveness when He was crucified. The question is - why would we be willing to carry around the baggage of bitterness and be unwilling to forgive? I remember a time many years ago when I harbored such feelings toward an individual who had acted in a way that hurt my wife and myself. Thank God I came to the place of forgiving that person and we became very good friends. I know it doesn't always work out that way, but it is still the right and best thing to do. Jesus illustrated this when He told the story of a wayward son who left home and wasted part of his life. When he decided to come back, the father extended forgiveness to him and was joyful, but the brother refused to forgive him and he was miserable. Too often, we only think of forgiveness as doing something for some else and while that is true, we may forget it does something for us. It liberates us from a burden that cannot be relieved in any other way. Is there someone you need to forgive?

February 6, 2006

We all have continual opportunities to be in touch with people in one way or another, briefly or for a longer period. Some of these people can have an impact for good upon our lives and most of us can probably recall instances when this happened. I know I have been influenced positively by a variety of people. For instance, there were three men who did just that when I was in my twenties, each in a different way. They would never stand out in a crowd, but I came to realize how important they were to me over the years. There is also the possibility that we can have an impact for good on others that cross our paths. I am thinking of a teenage girl who did not have a great background nor much hope for the future, but my wife used her chance to influence her. Fast forward----- She and her husband have raised a fine Christian family and it's a joy to read her annual progress report. Here is my conclusion... It is easy to miss out on people because we are too busy or self-absorbed. Train yourself to pay attention to people, to listen to people or respond to people when appropriate. When least expected, someone may add something you need to your life or you may give positive help to a person who, as it seems, was waiting for you. I believe that everyone who touches your life or mine is "God-sent" and prayerful interaction can count for time and eternity!

January 30, 2006

Consider this. Right now, you are in the place where you are supposed to be. You may not think so, you may not want to be there and someday you may move on, but for the present, you are where God wants to bless your life and use you for His glory. Crystal, my barber, is an example of what I am trying to say. She has worked at many locations and I have known her at three. The work atmosphere was not always the best, but she believed in God's plan, so He was able to help her and she helped others. Several years ago, God worked through her to help a friend of mine in a significant way. Recently, she moved into her own shop and needed another barber. In His unique way, God sent a man who was a new follower of Jesus and needed the support that she gives him. In addition she was able to assist in locating his grown children who have been out of his life for many years. Sometimes, we have the mistaken idea that life will be better and we will serve God better in another place and another time. Believe me, the time is NOW...the Lord wants to bless you and bless others through you NOW, if you will put your present and your future entirely in His hands!

January 23, 2006

Jim, a good friend of mine, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 15th. A few days before, he had called for his family to gather together with him at the Hospice Section of a VA Hospital. On Saturday, they all joined in a time of singing hymns, prayer and talking, which Jim was able to enjoy. When Debbie, his daughter, sent an Email describing this wonderful occasion of fellowship, I could not help thinking - what a great send-off for Jim and what a great memory for the family members to encourage them in the days ahead. So here is a question - When is the last time you were involved in making a great memory? There are frequent opportunities to do so, with loved ones, friends and acquaintances, if you are willing to put forth the effort. Keep an open mind and heart and you will make a variety of memories from real life situations, memories that will have a lasting effect on you and the lives of others!

Zohar Sharon is 53 years old. He became blind at age 28 when he was accidentally sprayed with a chemical. Everything seemed to fall apart and while he was trying to rebuild his life, his lawyer introduced him to golf. He tried it for several years, but quit because he said it was too hard. After 10 years, he returned to the golf course and with the help of a demanding coach, a determined caddie plus a dedicated dog, Sharon has earned the unlikely title - the world's best blind golfer. This story reminds me that we can be better than we are and do more than we have done. Maybe you have not moved forward in some area of your life because the challenge seemed too great. Be assured that God wants to help you with His resources and don't be surprised if He sends people - family members, friends, even strangers to encourage you on your new adventure of faith!

January 9, 2006

As my daughter was undergoing Physical Therapy, I had the opportunity to observe various treatments at the facility. Most of the patients have been injured and are hoping for restoration of bodily members and their use. Many do achieve good results as they work with the therapist who pushes them to the limit, enduring the pain which goes along with the process. This is a picture of life which often involves pain when we need or wish to achieve good objectives. It is often painful to humble yourself; to make an apology; to express love when it is not appreciated or to do your best when it isn't enough. This list could go on, but here's today's thought - when you take the high road and do the right thing, the rewards will be greater than the pain, in terms of personal satisfaction and becoming a stronger person!

President Lyndon Johnson once said, "If you don't want to be there on the take-off, you won't be there on the landing." Perhaps this gives us something to think about as we embark on a new year. Most of us want good results in this year, but that requires more than a dream. We must set our sights and begin to work toward our goals from day one. This is important for us who are followers of Jesus. Look at what Paul says in I Corinthians 9:25, "Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it for a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever." So here is the question for January 1, 2006 - Are you in the game???

December 26, 2005

At this time, a lot of people are saying, "Christmas is over, or at least for another year." But, is Christmas ever really over? I don't think so. The meaning and message of Christmas is embodied in HOPE and Jesus continues to bring HOPE.... HOPE to a world that is floundering; HOPE to those who are overwhelmed with circumstances beyond themselves; HOPE to any who are looking for light at the end of the tunnel; HOPE for those who have questions about the future; HOPE for the suffering and saddened. The truth is - we all need HOPE and Jesus assures us that there is enough HOPE to go around, so just help yourself to all the HOPE you require and accept His peace and His joy for the journey ahead!

I was talking to Linda, who works for an Optometrist. She told me about an elderly man who purchased his glasses and then, would come back every day or so, to complain of some problem. She found nothing wrong with the glasses, but she would clean them, share a few words and he was on his way. One day she said to him, "Your glasses are okay, but if you just want to stop in and see us, you're welcome anytime." His response was a big smile and a thank you. Linda made his day and perhaps, many days. In the midst of this busy Christmas season, it is good to remember that a little time, a little kindness, a little help can go a long way in blessing someone's life!

December 12, 2005

'Tis the season to be jolly - familiar words at this time of year. Oh yes, there will be the usual parties and cycles of gift-giving, but that doesn't mean that everyone will be jolly. Just look at the shoppers, many seem tired, frustrated and unhappy. Then, there are those who don't feel a part of the celebration or who are absorbed with personal problems. Still others will find that their bubble pops on Dec. 26th. With all the hyped up hilarity and all the talk of togetherness, maybe it's time for those of us on the inside to reach out to those who haven't crossed the threshold and maybe it's time for those of us who feel like outsiders to come closer to the circle.....and then, maybe we all could get beyond the extraneous things to enjoy each other and the real meaning of Christmas. But there is one problem, are you ready for this? Someone has to make the first move!

December 5, 2005

Perhaps you have read of the pastor who was electrocuted when he stepped into the baptistery and grabbed the microphone. The woman waiting to be baptized, survived because she had not proceeded into the water. Quite often, in natural disasters, one home may be demolished while the one next door will be untouched or an entire family will die except for one person. I am reminded of an incident where a man rescued a boy from drowning. After the boy recovered from the shock, he came to the man and said, "Thank you for saving my life," and his reply was, "I am glad I could do it, but make sure your life was worth saving." As we prepare to celebrate the coming of Jesus as our Savior, it might be fitting to ask ourselves why we are still alive. It certainly is not because we are better than others or because we're lucky. The answer is quite simple, we are here to share the message and love of Jesus - and we need to be about it!

November 28, 2005

It happened this past August in Richmond, VA., when a school district decided to sell 1,000 4-year old laptop computers for $50. each to county residents. When 5,500 showed up for the event, it turned into a stampede with people being thrown to the ground and nearly run over by someone trying to maneuver his car through the crowd. All this chaos was about getting a well-used laptop with a short-term life expectancy. The question arises, do we sometimes get charged up and motivated by "things of the moment" which have little lasting significance? You will remember that Jesus focused on that which mattered, not only for today, but also for tomorrow and into the future. Let us follow His example.

November 21, 2005

Recently, the Department of Education of one of our states, decided that it would be more appropriate for school students to refer to "Thanksgiving Day" as "Lucky Thursday" - it's hard to see the connection. Naturally, it is disturbing when those in authority seek to take away the history and traditions of this celebration, which are such a part of our heritage. Here's the truth, they can take thanksgiving out of the system, but they can't take thanksgiving out of a person's heart. I heard a mother say that the one thing she sought to teach her children was to be thankful instead of whining or complaining - what a wonderful goal. As followers of the Lord, let us observe Thanksgiving Day, but more than that, let us give thanks to Him every day, for who He is and for all He has provided for us.

November 14, 2005

Most of us want to be brave and strong. Many who have displayed these attributes, will also acknowledge times of weakness. You will find this to be true when you study the lives of heroes recorded in the Bible and history. The truth is, that this is not something we achieve once and for all, at a given time, but with each new challenging situation in life, we will require a different degree of courage and strength. If you are feeling weakened by some formidable problem facing you, listen to this: David says in Psalm 28:7 - "The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped." Paul says in II Corinthians 12:10 - "For when I am weak, then I am strong." So here's the solution. Depend on the Lord, draw on His grace and He will enable you to be brave and strong, wherever you are and whatever you have to do, today and tomorrow.

November 7, 2005

A few days after our visit from Hurricane Wilma, I was at a local Walmart, standing in line to purchase bags of ice. There had been some confusion about where to line up and where to pay, consequently, the woman in front of me began yelling at a worker nearby. When her face became very red, I tapped her on the shoulder and said, "Try to relax, everything will be OK."

She turned around, vented a little more of her anger and then, much to my surprise, cracked a smile. I found out that she had brought an elderly woman to shop and she had lost track of her in the crowded store. During those few moments, we had a pleasant conversation, I complimented her for being a good neighbor and when we parted, her frame of mind was much improved.

So here's my thought - The Lord can enable you to live on the "plus" side of life and when you do, you can help somebody who is having a "down" day, to have a better day!

OCTOBER 31, 2005

I, like some of you, first knew Mimi when she lived with her family in Willow Grove, PA. Now she lives with her husband and children in South Florida.

Today, I received an E-mail from her which told of their experiences as a result of Hurricane Wilma. Her main emphasis was on the positive things which have happened - the kids playing in the street (no TV), time for the family to draw close together and to work on projects. Almost as an aside, she mentioned that there is a hole in the roof, half of the shingles are gone and they are still living without electricity. Mimi illustrates a Biblical truth which can be said in this way: "What's going on outside of you is not as important as what's going on inside of you." When you have the Lord and He is really a part of your everyday life, you will see things in a different light, a light that can't be blocked by circumstances!

OCTOBER 24, 2005

WORRY... this is a follow-up to last week with a few additional thoughts on the subject. Why do we hang on to worry? Does it make us feel better? Does it provide any answers? Does it alleviate stress? Yet, we often continue to allow our minds to be badgered by this destructive force. Listen to this: WORRY is not your friend, but your enemy. God is your friend. WORRY is the opponent of trust. WORRY is not a disease and we do not have to worry - we choose to worry and that's a bad choice. Instead, choose to trust God. When you do that and hang on to His promises, worry is dispelled. It's as simple as that!

* * * * * * * *

OCTOBER 17, 2005

WORRY. That's a word we all recognize and, to be truthful, most of us have done our share of worrying. The onset of worry is generally a reaction to circumstances and our fears, but we know that worry provides no solutions and often impedes the ability to think logically. Here are two suggestions that can effectively help to break the tendency to worry.

1. When a problem arises, ask yourself if there is something you can do to help the situation, sort of like rendering first aid.

2. When you are frustrated and start to go into the worry mode, do what the Bible says - here is a paraphrase: "Don't worry, but pray about the matter and give it over to the Lord. He will give you peace of heart and mind, which is the absence of worry." This may take a little doing, but it works!

OCTOBER 10, 2005

How do you start your day? What are your thoughts? What will you bring to the hours ahead? You've heard the sayings, "getting out on the wrong side of the bed" and "getting off on the wrong foot." Well, it isn't hard to prove that starting with a negative attitude can drag you down and impact the lives of others throughout the day. The worst part is that this can become a habit and standard procedure. Let me suggest an alternative. Start by thanking God for giving you another day with its blessings and think of one thing you can do to make this day worthwhile. Reinforce this mental exercise by choosing a verse of scripture that will inspire and encourage you in a positive way. Repeat it numerous times and keep it in the front of your mind as you pursue each phase of your daily life. Believe me, the results will be obvious!

OCTOBER 3, 2005

Some weeks ago, my daughter was involved in an auto accident. Afterwards, I thought that she might have avoided the crash, if she had been a minute earlier. This reminded me that I, and probably you, can recall when we narrowly escaped dangerous incidents. Further than that, God has preserved us at other times, when we were not aware of the perils. Sometimes God delivers us and takes us out of "bad" situations; sometimes, He takes us through them. Guess when we seem to learn the most? May God help us not to forget the lessons which have come our way!

SEPTEMBER 26, 2005

Another story from Katrina. An older man named Martin, was trapped in his house. Because of flood waters, he spent most of the 16 days in the attic where his supply of food and water ran out. After being rescued, he said that he probably would have died from the heat, if it had not been for the shade of a tree that fell on his roof. Here's something to ponder. When there seems to be no solution, when you don't know what to do or where to turn, then remember this - the Lord's resources are never exhausted, just trust Him!

* * * * * * * *

SEPTEMBER 19, 2005

Hurricane Katrina produced this interesting story. In surveying the destruction, a man tells of a place where there was a church property. Everything in the general area was leveled except for a statue of Jesus with open arms, which remained intact. However you view this, it does make a statement. Wherever you are in life or whatever you may be going through, Jesus is there to embrace you, if you will only come to Him. No one can remove His presence!

* * * * * * * *

SEPTEMBER 12, 2005

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has monopolized our headlines, which is only right. Many other news stories seem insignificant, sometimes out of place. To illustrate this, some people who are far removed from the site seem consumed with the inconveniences and higher prices that will filter their way.

It reminds me of a story following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. With destruction and suffering all around him, a man was sitting on the sidewalk polishing handles for coffins which he expected to sell.

As disciples of Christ, this is time for our faith to be strong, a time to put ourselves in the background and a time to allow the Lord's compassion and love to flow through us in our words and actions!

SEPTEMBER 5, 2005

You might say that I live in a hurricane belt. Hurricane Katrina made landfall about 50 miles south of where I live, in Florida. That area is still recovering while we had minimal damage. However, Katrina was not finished and as a much stronger storm, left the Gulf Coast with serious loss of life and devastation. Hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. used to be called Acts of God, but more and more that term has disappeared because there is an element in our society who have the arrogance to believe that we, as humans, can control everything. As followers of the Lord, let us be sure that our faith is in the Maker of Heaven and Earth. We may not understand all that happens, but we can afford to trust Him, not only in times of disaster, but also on the ups and downs of our earthly journey, day by day!

It is worth noting, that with all the progress and precautions that are part of our modern society, the element of fear has not been eliminated, or perhaps not even diminished, over time. It doesn't help when people with access to the public forum often add to the problem. We rationalize that there is a reason to fear, but does that alleviate our concerns? Our astronauts commented on the magnitude and beauty of all they could see as they orbited in space, but the truth is that they could only view a fraction of God's amazing universe which He created and sustains with perfect precision. The only answer to fear is seeing the big picture with God in the center and entrusting our lives into His care!

Get outta Dodge - you've heard the phrase. A current ad suggests that Dodge (where you are) may offer little or nothing while Las Vegas offers everything. We know that's a bit of a stretch. You may feel like you're living in Dodge for various reasons and you're anxious for a change. It may be something in your personal situation, financial difficulties, relationship problems, being bored with work or the same old routine. At times, almost any opportunity sounds ideal, but remember, there is no Utopia. So how do we deal with Dodge? First, never be in a hurry to jump ship without giving consideration to the long view - "there" is not always better than "here." Realize that you are not being punished, but God has you where you are for a reason. Learn to enjoy His peace and contentment now and you will be prepared to follow the Lord as He leads you step by step into your future!

AUGUST 15, 2005

It happened at a baseball game in Cincinnati, when the Reds were playing the Braves. A young boy was in attendance with his grandfather and during the game, the man collapsed. While paramedics were working on him, a security officer took the boy to the Reds' Bullpen where the pitchers joined him in cheering for the team. When the game was over, they took the boy on the field to meet other team members who befriended him and gave him gifts, including a batting helmet one player had worn at the All-star Game. The grandfather died and I am sure the boy will miss him greatly, but his sadness will be softened as he remembers the kindness of the players. As children of God, we should be known for spreading kindness, not just at planned events, but spontaneously as the opportunities come. You can be sure they will, but we need to be looking for them and not allow the "important" things to get in the way!

AUGUST 8, 2005

The daily news usually brings more reports about the loss of life than the preservation of life, but the other day, two such stories made headlines. One was in a local paper, telling of a boy who had been struck by lightning. The lightning pierced a hole in his cap and his neck was burned, but he is OK. His father calls him a walking miracle. Then there was the Air France Jet that attempted to land in Toronto, but skidded off the runway and crashed. All on board escaped safely amidst fire, fumes and confusion. It was termed an aviation miracle. In less dramatic ways, our lives are constantly preserved by the miraculous power of God. So here's the point - we should be grateful for life and thoughtful about how we are using it. As God's people, we should be excited that He can fulfill His purpose through each of us, a day at a time.

Gerry Thomas, who passed away recently, was relatively unknown, but he did come out with a significant invention in the early 50's, the TV Dinner. Marketed by Swanson, 10 million TV Dinners were sold in the first year and the boom continues until this day. In 1999, speaking of his accomplishment, Mr. Thomas said, "It changed the way people live, it's a part of the fabric of our country." Like so many inventions and innovations that have been woven into the American lifestyle, it has a good side and a bad side. It has been a help for people whose cooking skills are limited and to those who otherwise face difficulties in preparing meals. On the other hand, the very name began a movement to draw people away from the familial setting of the dinner table and plant them in front of the TV. As followers of the Lord, we need to scrutinize our activities and choose only those that are good for ourselves, as well as for others within our responsibility and sphere of influence!

JULY 25, 2005

There is an ad on TV which has an applicant for a job, being offered the position plus an unbelievable package of compensation and benefits. His response is, "Is it OK if I get back to you?" Sounds like a good way to talk yourself out of a job. One day, a man was telling me of the many opportunities he had missed and further conversation revealed that he was something like the man in the ad. Life does bring us many open doors, not just to employment, but to better ourselves and to serve loved ones or others. We need to respond positively to such opportunities, if we expect to achieve and receive the blessings God has for us!

JULY 18, 2005

Where did the time go? I believe that most of us have asked that question. Some people believe that time moves faster today, because of the pace of the modern era, but I remember, as a child, asking, "Is it time to go to bed, already?" I've heard friends say that they can't wait until they retire so they will have more time do what they want to do. Then, there is the matter of wasting time which we all know something about, although we may define the phrase differently. Without doubt, time is a precious commodity and the Bible urges us to live wisely so that we may buy up the time or opportunities which life offers us. When we have regrets about the use of time, it is usually because we have little to show for it, so here's a suggestion - Take time, each day, to do something beyond yourself, something that has value beyond the moment!

JULY 11, 2005

While driving my sister across state to her home, we stopped at an inn for lunch. After eating, we paused and had a conversation with one of the ladies at the front desk. She mentioned that she would be hosting a family get-together on July 4th and asked this question, "Why is it that one person tries to spoil such occasions for everyone else?" Apparently, her aunt always brings up unsavory items from the past, blames others for her problems and puts a damper on the festivities. My response was, "Don't allow anyone to rain on your parade. With God's help you can have an enjoyable day. When someone wants to be unhappy, we don't have to join them." Her face lit up and she said, "That's what I'll do. I will announce that this is going to be a happy time, I intend to be happy and I invite all of you to join in and be happy too." The lady makes a good point and I think you get it!

JULY 4, 2005

My daughter and her husband toured some small communities in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. In each place, they observed that little was going on, so they asked one lady, "what do you do for excitement?" Her answer was "nothing." Turns out that "nothing" is really "something" because these people enjoy inter-acting with each other and with visitors. The residents represent generations of families who love the life they share and have no desire to leave. Are they oddballs because they are happy with this simple lifestyle while many of us focus on more of the "good life" and programmed activities? Perhaps we might try mingling more with family, friends and people who find their way into our lives. Who knows, doing "nothing" might grow on us and we might even like it!

JUNE 27, 2005

Florida is known for its "gated communities" which are supposed to make residents feel safer from unwanted intruders, but come to find out, many of the break-ins and thefts are linked to the inside. So it is with our personal lives. While others may irritate us and behave badly, the feelings of envy, jealousy, animosity and anger come from inside of us. But God wants to help and here's the answer. Walk with Him and talk with Him along the path of each day. He, in turn, will enable you to exercise self-control and experience peace. Make this a habit and you'll be surprised at how it affects your over-all health!

Perhaps you saw this news report - Grieving 9/11 widow spends almost $5 Million. Kathy Trant received over $2 Million from the Federal Victim Compensation Fund plus another $3 Million from friends and family. After spending down to $500,000, this is her excuse, "It's blood money that I don't want, I want my husband back." Now, she plans to partner in starting a small business and also to help other people with similar problems to hers. Here are 3 points we can take from this woman's story:

  • 1. Value the people in your life while you have each other.
  • 2. Value God's gift of life and the benefits He puts at your disposal. Use them wisely and for good.
  • 3. Value the Lord's directions for living and if you start getting off the path, seek God's help to make necessary corrections before you hurt others as well as yourself.

The job at hand was to remove a door knob in order to replace it with a new one. The fixture was different from others I had encountered and my first attempt at removing the screws was not too successful. So, I stopped and took time to analyze the situation, thinking that there must be an easier way.

Bingo, there was and the task was completed quickly. In more important areas of life, we often rush into things without giving due consideration and don't get the desired results. Sometimes, we just need to read the instructions (in the Bible) or take a few moments to pray. Turning to God makes life easier and better because His solutions always work!

June 6, 2005

There is an old saying, "No person is an island," which refutes the notion that what I do is my business. Each of us make choices and those choices influence others. Parents teach their children by the choices they make. Choices have consequences, good or bad, affecting family members, friends, co-workers and others in our community. Your faith is evidenced by your character and character is defined by choices, so here is some advice:

STAND STRAIGHT - always choose to do what is right and moral according to the Bible.

STAND FIRM - stick to your guns, do not cave in to the lower standards and rationale of prevailing trends.

STAND TALL - don't be ashamed when you have made the right choice or contemplate doing so.

Make no mistake - your choices are very important, to you and to others you care about!

What good did it do? Have you ever asked that question? I did the other day after cleaning the outside of my front windows. Actually, they were quite crusty and I had to try four different preparations plus a razor blade to get the job done. The effort seemed worth it until 30 minutes later when the new sprinkler came on and spattered them all over again. I guess the good part is that the spots are mostly seen from the inside. But that got me to thinking. I'm sure you've had the experience - you worked hard, you did something good, you gave your time, you went the second mile, seemingly for nothing. Other people or circumstances changed the expected outcome. Well, here's the good part - God can take the worst mess and bring something good from it. If you take a look, you may see it now, or it may take awhile, but trust Him, some good will rub off on your life and spirit!

Sometimes it is easy to feel that other people always get the breaks or that you are stuck where you are, at a dead end. Russell Conwell, founder of Temple University, became famous for his lecture, "Acres of Diamonds." He told a series of stories about people who had the above feelings and left home to seek life's treasures, only to discover that others came and found those treasures on the properties they had abandoned. Further stories showed people who stayed where they were and through ambitious creativity, turned negative situations into treasuries of blessings. In Conwell's words, "The idea is, that you have the opportunity to make more of yourself, in your own environment, with your own skill, with your own energy and with your own friends." Enough said!

As a boy, I occasionally joined my friends to search for a four-leaf clover. We never found any and so, our span of concentration didn't last very long. Adults often play the lottery or slot machines with the same hope of getting fast and fantastic results. Faith is not about groping after God, but it is about God coming to us and offering His plan for our lives. This plan begins where you are and will be continually revealed, day by day, as you follow the Lord. While His plan does not promise you good luck, it is designed to enable you to enjoy the best in life and to get you through the worst in life. Here is good advice. Don't give up on God's plan when you have questions about things working out - stick with it and you will find satisfaction and peace, which are worth more than any temporary acquisitions!

You heard about the fireman in Buffalo who came back to real life after 10 years, from what doctors called a "vegetative state." After conversing for hours with family and friends, a few days later he was walking with the aid of a walker. Truly a miracle! I have a question. If everything progresses, do you think this man will spend his time bemoaning all that he missed in those 10 years? I doubt it. On the contrary, he will welcome each day enthusiastically, with the desire to enjoy and make the most of it. Likewise, we should not spend the time given us, dwelling on "what could have been," but let us grasp the opportunities of every day to find joy and happiness by being pleasant, kind, productive and grateful to God for all of our blessings!

My father was part of a pioneer grocery chain for 25 years. He and our family thought we were secure. Wrong. Along came super markets and like the proverbial rug, his security was pulled out from under him. Fast forward, and today that chain, which numbered 15,000 stores, has virtually disappeared from the landscape of America. This tells us that change is inevitable and somewhere, sometime, we all face a situation where the rug is pulled out. So, what do we do when life begins to crumble around us? Well, as God's people, we have three pillars of support to rely on - faith, family and friends. Don't neglect them in the good times and they will take you through the tough times!

You are probably familiar with the Dutch expression, "the hurrieder I go, the behinder I get." Linking these words with other sayings, "haste makes waste"...."look before you leap" and the idea of "snap decisions," gives you the basis of what I want to say. Most of us admit to being short on patience, which sometimes leads us to act like there is no tomorrow. Recently, I have become aware of several situations where the people involved exhibited patience and saved themselves from future unhappiness. When we read the Psalms, we are told many times to "wait patiently for the Lord." If you are involved in a short-term problem like being late for an appointment, a traffic jam, or frustration with trying to complete a project, here is some good advice - slow down and temper your emotions. On the other hand, if you are wrestling with a long-term decision - the willingness to wait is a good thing - check it out!

April 18, 2005

Everyone has problems, but not all are of the same magnitude. Some are very serious and some may be trivial. It is a bit strange that there is often a tendency to over-play a problem of lesser importance, with the result of causing others to suffer or, at least, spilling over in their lives. One day, in a restaurant, the waitress was having an argument with her boss. Consequently, her problem spilled over on her co-workers and customers, in terms of attitude, mistakes and poor service. Problems are inevitable, but how we deal with them is a matter of choice. Perhaps the waitress could have put her problem on the back burner until she was finished with her immediate duties. I don't know anybody who is problem-free, but the people who decide not to make mountains out of molehills are those who usually find ways to be happy and enjoy life!

April 11, 2005

As one observes current events, it seems as if many people are enamored with death. While there is a place for grieving and respecting the memory of those who have passed away, the main focus of the followers of Jesus should be on life. Recently, a priest who viewed the body of Pope John Paul, was reported to have said, "He didn't look good, he looked dead." Of course, he is dead, as far as this life is concerned, but I would remind you that after Martha's brother died, Jesus spoke these words, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" So, how do we focus on life? We should live out the Gospel. First, by reflecting and conveying hope in the face of death; hope that is available to all who put their trust in the Savior. Secondly, by paying attention to the people God has put in our lives and in a broader sense, as one has said, "Doing all the good we can, in all the ways we can, for all the people we can!"

You and I are living miracles. If you awoke today and if you are able to function, you are a Living Miracle. However, you are also a Miracle in the Making. Allow me to illustrate - a boy went with a crowd to listen to Jesus, but he didn't realize that he was a Miracle in the Making and that the Lord would use his lunch to feed thousands. The woman who was healed by touching the garment of Jesus was a Miracle in the Making for those 12 years that she was afflicted. A Miracle in the Making has as much to do with your spiritual development as it does with your concerns. God is doing miracles constantly. Sometimes they happen unexpectedly or quickly, but sometimes they are delayed, at least from our perspective. The point is - You are a Miracle in the Making, so trust God and don't miss what He wants to do in your life and through your life!

March 28, 2005

Recently, a religious and cultural battle ensued concerning Terri Schiavo. One commentator described it as an argument about the meaning or value of life. Apart from this case, those of us who follow Jesus, should realize that life is valuable from the beginning to the end of this earthly journey, which includes its importance on a daily basis. We are all part of God's phenomenal Divine Scheme, but, too often, we only see ourselves as insignificant pieces of the "big picture." I could tell you many stories of people who can look back and see the non-spectacular, yet thrilling results of allowing the Lord to work out His plan in their lives. It is easy to want God to endorse our plans; it is better to pray for His plan and follow the way He leads, day by day. Believe me, it's there for the asking!

All of us have some priorities in life. They may be in the form of schedules, appointments, plans or simple routines which we follow. In general, this is good, but what happens when there is an intrusion which could interfere with where we want to go or what we want to do? Recently, I've heard several accounts where people told of some such interruption in their day which was not really welcome, but turned into something meaningful for them or for someone else. Things which we perceive to be a hindrance or inconvenience are often incidents which provide ways for us to experience God's providence and blessings. Here's another priority to add to your list. Make the effort to capitalize on intrusions!

I just can't pass this by - the story of the incredible woman who was held hostage by the guy who killed four people in the Atlanta courtroom drama. In case you missed it, this woman made pancakes for her captor, then read to him from the Bible plus several paragraphs from chapter 33 of The Purpose Driven Life. When he asked her, "What shall I do?" She told him to turn himself in, go to prison and share God's Word with others. Don't miss the point here - while this is a story of courage and inner strength, it's more than that. We know that this lady realized she was in God's hands. She also knew that God had a purpose for her to fulfill, even in the midst of obvious danger and she determined to do just that. Remember this, the next time you are in a difficult or tight spot, use the opportunity to fulfill your purpose and represent your Lord with honor!

Here is something else I learned from my Cataract Surgery. I now have a different lens in each eye. The lens in my left eye is for that which is close-up, like reading, while the lens in my right eye is for general viewing and distance.

I wondered if there could be a conflict between the two, but they actually work together to give me better, overall vision. Sometimes we find it difficult to function with certain people because they are not like us, but consider this possibility. When we accept and cooperate with those who are different, more often than not, our lives are enriched and blessed with added grace and understanding!

All you have to is look at statistics and see how the average life-span has expanded considerably over the last 75 or 50 or 25 years. In fact, they just "upped" it again. Well, that's what we wanted, isn't it? Actually, we were elated when the increase began to show up, but now that we've been on the road awhile, we have discovered that what we really wanted, was to have the same life at 80 or 90 that we had at 30 or 40. It didn't quite work out that way. So, what is my conclusion? Simply this - pray that God will allow you to live long enough to fulfill His purpose in this world. Then, keep this objective in your thinking and actions - every day!

Note: Update on Cataract Surgery. Had my right eye done last Tues. and it went well. Post-op checkup was good. My sight has improved in several ways and I can't say enough about the Dr. and all the staff. Thanks so much for your prayers, God's presence was real. Will report several observations from this experience in future Encouragers.

January 24, 2005

Last Thursday was the inauguration of our president, something we do every four years. The British have their coronation, while other countries have their own pageantry and ceremony to recognize leaders. As I pondered all this, my mind jumped ahead to the time when Jesus Christ will return, in person, to rule the world. What will it be like when there is real peace on earth? Further, what will it be like when the kingdom of this world becomes the Kingdom of our Lord, when every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord? And so, when right seems wrong and evil seems to prevail, do not fear, do not lose heart, that Great Day is coming - the best is yet to be. Let us be optimistic and look forward as followers of the King of kings and Lord of lords!
